London-based Volt has introduced the Volt Lite, a mid-drive folding electric bike (e-bike) tailored for the urban commuter. This innovative model combines the convenience of a foldable design with the efficiency and comfort required for city travels. Weighing just 17 kg and equipped with a low-maintenance carbon belt, the Volt Lite is designed to simplify the urban commute while offering a reliable performance.
One of the main challenges city commuters face is integrating different modes of transport into their daily journey. The Volt Lite addresses this by offering a foldable design, making it an ideal companion for those who need to switch between cycling and public transport. Once folded, the bike measures 34 x 19.5 x 27.5 inches (86.36 x 49.53 x 69.85 cm), a compact size that can easily fit into most public transport spaces.
The bike’s weight varies depending on the battery choice. With the standard 252-Wh battery, it weighs 37.5 lb (17 kg), while the longer-range 378-Wh battery, offering up to 60 miles (96.5 km) of travel, brings the weight to 39.7 lb (18 kg). The bike’s frame, made of hinged aluminum, is held together by magnets during transit for added security.
Volt Lite’s performance is powered by a Bafang M820 mid-drive motor, delivering 75 Nm (55.3 lb.ft) of torque. It offers pedal-assist up to 15.5 mph (25 km/h), compliant with local regulations. The inclusion of a responsive torque sensing feature enhances the riding experience, making it easier to tackle city terrains.
In terms of maintenance and usability, Volt has chosen a Gates CDX Carbon Belt drive over a traditional chain. This choice significantly reduces noise and maintenance needs. Additionally, the bike includes a Shimano Nexus 3-speed hub with twist grip shifting, providing flexibility for different riding conditions.
Other notable features of the Volt Lite include 20-inch wheels with puncture-resistant Schwalbe Big Ben tires, Tektro hydraulic disc brakes for reliable stopping power, LED lighting for visibility, full fenders, and a side kickstand.
Priced at £2,899 (approximately US$3,695), the hand-built Volt Lite offers an option to add a GPS tracker for added security. According to the company, the e-bike is set to be available from July, with plans to expand sales beyond the UK market.
The Volt Lite is an appealing option for urban commuters seeking a practical, efficient, and easy-to-manage e-bike. With its combination of portability, performance, and low maintenance, it stands out as a strong contender in the growing e-bike market.
