AirMarker rescue balloon helps make people easier to spot on water

A person in the water can be surprisingly difficult to see, even when rescuers know roughly where to look. Waves can repeatedly hide someone from view, while low light, glare and poor weather can make the search even harder.

Swiss company AirMarker has developed a different kind of emergency signal for this problem. Its AirMarker R.Four and R.Five use a bright orange, helium-filled balloon that rises above the water while remaining tethered to the user or their equipment.

Instead of producing a brief flash or sound, the system creates an elevated visual marker designed to remain noticeable for an extended period. The two water-focused models are intended for activities ranging from kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding to sailing, foiling and recreational boating.

A rescue signal that rises above the waves

The AirMarker system consists of a trigger unit, compressed helium cylinders, a tether and a specially designed signal balloon.

When the device is activated, the helium inflates the balloon and sends it upward on a high-performance synthetic line. On the R.Four and R.Five, the balloon can rise as high as 5 metres, or approximately 16.4 feet, above the water.

AirMarker R.Four Balloon Rescue System
The AirMarker R.Four is designed for watersports including kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, sailing, canoeing and foiling, with a waterproof Dry Bag for convenient storage and transport.

That height is central to the idea. A person floating at water level may repeatedly disappear behind waves, whereas an orange balloon positioned several metres above the surface has a better chance of remaining visible from a boat, shoreline or aircraft.

The balloon’s altitude can also be adjusted according to weather and water conditions by changing the effective length of the tether. A carabiner and elastic attachment system allow the unit to be secured to equipment, a life jacket, harness, railing or other suitable anchor point.

AirMarker says the balloon can continue signaling for up to three days after deployment.

Designed to remain visible after dark

The signal is not based on colour alone.

The round balloon measures approximately 41 centimetres in diameter and includes reflective elements as well as an integrated light source. The LED is designed to switch on automatically as ambient light falls and switch off again when conditions become brighter.

According to the product information, the light can operate for around 22 hours. This gives the balloon an additional nighttime signal while the reflective surfaces can respond to searchlights and other external illumination.

AirMarker R.Four Balloon Rescue System Tethered
After activation, the AirMarker inflates a 41 cm orange rescue balloon that remains tethered to the user while providing a highly visible signal for up to three days.

AirMarker also says the balloon uses a special coating intended to influence its radar signature. The company is careful not to guarantee radar detection because performance can depend on the radar system, weather, distance, balloon movement and deployment height. However, it says the design may assist localization in some search situations.

The balloon’s most straightforward function remains visual: lifting a large orange marker above the water so that someone in distress is easier to identify.

AirMarker R.Four is designed for different watersports

The AirMarker R.Four is the more broadly adaptable of the two water-focused models.

It is intended to fit into boat kits and watersports equipment used for activities such as kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, sailing, surfing and foiling.

Its attachment system allows it to be connected to a life jacket, harness, surfboard, inflatable boat, canoe, railing or other equipment. It is supplied in a waterproof AirMarker Dry Bag to protect the unit while it is being carried.

The R.Four uses an ABS housing and contains three 63 ml helium cylinders. It measures 95 × 84 × 251 mm and weighs approximately 890 grams.

AirMarker Balloon Rescue System Integrated LED Light
An integrated LED light and reflective elements improve the balloon’s visibility in low-light conditions, helping rescuers identify its location after dark.

The product is described as splash-proof rather than fully waterproof, which is why the supplied Dry Bag is an important part of the carrying system.

AirMarker R.Five is intended primarily for boats

The AirMarker R.Five uses the same basic balloon signaling concept but is configured more specifically for boating.

Its waterproof Dry Bag can be attached to a boat using a Velcro-based system, making the device accessible without requiring it to be carried directly on the body throughout the journey.

After the balloon has been deployed, the AirMarker unit can be placed back inside the Dry Bag and secured to the user. The bag is designed to float, helping prevent the main unit from sinking while the balloon remains tethered above the water.

This arrangement is particularly relevant if someone has left or fallen from a boat and needs to keep the device with them in the water.

The R.Five also uses an ABS housing, three helium cylinders, reflectors and an integrated LED. Like the R.Four, its balloon can rise up to 5 metres and signal for up to three days.

One-time deployment with a replacement option

Both water models are intended for one-time emergency deployment.

Once the trigger has been activated and the helium has inflated the balloon, the device cannot simply be repacked and reused with the same internal components.

AirMarker says customers can return a deployed unit and receive a replacement at a special price. The company also encourages owners to register their products so they can keep track of service requirements, warranty information and maintenance intervals.

AirMarker R.Five Balloon Rescue System
The AirMarker R.Five is intended for recreational boats and includes a floating Dry Bag that can be attached to the vessel and secured to the user after deployment.

The one-time design is comparable to other emergency equipment that uses a sealed charge or consumable component. Owners therefore need to store the device correctly, inspect it periodically and ensure it remains accessible.

It complements rather than replaces other safety equipment

The AirMarker addresses visibility, but it does not solve every part of a water emergency.

It does not replace a properly fitted personal flotation device, and it does not transmit a distress message or precise GPS location in the way a satellite messenger, personal locator beacon or emergency radio can.

Instead, it is intended to complement those systems.

A flotation device helps keep someone above the surface. A communication device can alert rescuers and provide location information. The AirMarker then adds an elevated visual signal that may help search teams identify the person’s actual position among waves, glare or surrounding objects.

Its usefulness will still depend on conditions. Strong winds, nearby obstructions, severe weather and the user’s ability to deploy and secure the system can all influence its performance.

AirMarker also offers a mountain-focused model

Although the R.Four and R.Five are designed for water use, they form part of a broader AirMarker lineup.

The AirMarker R.One is the company’s model for mountain and land-based outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing, mountain biking, trail running and hunting.

AirMarker R.One Balloon Rescue System
The AirMarker R.One helps rescuers spot hikers and outdoor adventurers with a balloon that rises up to 45 metres (148 ft).

It uses a much longer tether than the water models, allowing its orange balloon to rise as high as 45 metres. The greater height is intended to lift the signal above terrain, trees or other obstructions.

Pricing and availability

AirMarker lists separate prices according to the customer’s region and purchasing currency.

The AirMarker R.One costs CHF 199 in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, €199 in Europe and US$269 for customers purchasing in US dollars.

The water-focused AirMarker R.Four costs CHF 299, €299 or US$359, depending on the applicable purchasing region.

The boat-oriented AirMarker R.Five costs CHF 319, €319 or US$385.

AirMarker applies Swiss francs to orders from Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein, euros to European orders and US dollars to orders from the rest of the world. Shipping charges, taxes and final availability may vary by destination.

A simple visual idea for a difficult rescue problem

The AirMarker R.Four and R.Five do not attempt to replace modern emergency communication systems. Their purpose is narrower but easy to understand: make the person who needs help more visible.

By lifting a bright, illuminated and reflective balloon up to 5 metres above the water, the system moves the emergency signal away from the surface, where it would otherwise be repeatedly hidden by waves.

For kayakers, paddleboarders, sailors, foilers and boat users, it offers another layer of safety that can be packed alongside existing flotation and communication equipment.

AirMarker Balloon Rescue System Elevated Visual Marker
Unlike traditional flares, the AirMarker creates an elevated visual marker that remains above the water, making it easier to distinguish from waves during search and rescue operations.

In an emergency, the difference may come down to something very simple: helping rescuers see exactly where to look.
