360-degree swivel beach chair lets you follow the sun without moving

Most beach chairs do one thing: they hold you in one direction until you decide to move them. That means picking up your chair, your towel, your bag, and everything else attached to your setup, and repositioning the whole arrangement every time the sun shifts, someone in your group moves, or you simply want to face a different direction. It is a small inconvenience by most measures — but Joseph Block noticed it on a day trip to the Jersey Shore and decided it was worth solving properly.

“The idea for the Orbit Beach Chair was originally conceived after a day-trip to the Jersey Shore, upon noticing sunbathers picking up their belongings and turning their chairs to face the sun every few hours,” said Block, co-founder and President of Orbit Beach Chair. What followed was more than five years of designing, engineering, prototyping, and patenting a chair built around a single functional addition: a 360-degree swivel base.

The result is the Orbit Beach Chair — a folding, reclining outdoor chair from Roosevelt, New Jersey-based Orbit Beach Chair LLC, built around a ball-bearing swivel mechanism that lets the seat rotate a full 360 degrees in either direction while the legs stay planted in place.

The core mechanism

The swivel is the defining feature, and significant engineering attention went into making it durable enough for a saltwater, sand, and sun environment. The ball-bearing assembly has a silicone seal designed to prevent rust and debris from entering the bearings. The base fabric is patented for two specific functions: preventing the chair legs from sinking into sand, and providing an additional layer of mechanical protection to the swivel assembly sitting beneath it.

Users can rotate toward or away from the sun without dragging the chair through sand.

These are the kinds of details that tend not to appear in marketing photos but determine whether a product holds up past the first few beach trips. A swivel mechanism that jams with debris or corrodes with saltwater exposure would defeat the purpose entirely. The silicone seal and the patented base fabric address both of those failure modes directly.

“When conceptualizing the Orbit Beach Chair, we spent over 5 years designing, engineering, prototyping, and patenting a chair that addressed functionality, style, ease of transportation and comfort,” said Block.

Construction and materials

The frame is anodized aluminum — corrosion-resistant and meaningfully lighter than steel, which remains important when the chair needs to be carried to and from the water. The seat fabric is weather-treated for outdoor durability. The armrests are splinter-resistant wood, a deliberate choice over plastic, which tends to become brittle and chalky under prolonged UV exposure.

The chair reclines into three distinct positions, giving the user some control over posture regardless of which direction they are facing. An adjustable neck pillow is attached to the headrest and can be flipped to the back side when not in use. An attached holder accommodates a cup, bottle, or cell phone. A large storage pouch with velcro closure sits at the rear of the seat for additional items.

Carrying is handled via padded backpack straps integrated into the frame — no separate carrying bag needed.

Specs at a glance

The Orbit Beach Chair weighs 15.5 pounds (approximately 7 kg) — heavier than a lightweight camping chair, but within the typical range for a full-featured beach chair with aluminum construction and a built-in mechanical assembly. The seat sits 12 inches (roughly 30 cm) off the ground, slightly higher than many traditional low-slung beach chairs. Assembled dimensions are 18 × 23.5 × 36 inches. The factory-recommended weight capacity is 225 pounds (approximately 102 kg).

The chair is available in two colors: Blue and Coral.

Practical use cases

The swivel functionality is most obviously useful at the beach, where the sun moves predictably across the sky over the course of a day and most people end up repositioning at least once or twice. But the chair has found consistent use beyond the shoreline. Reviewers mention it at pool decks, sporting events, tailgates, and backyard gatherings — anywhere that a fixed-direction seat creates friction.

Co-founder and COO Amy Bright pointed to a broader context when the chair launched. “Once the pandemic hit, we realized there was even more of a need for a comfortable, portable, multi-purpose outdoor chair for those wanting to social distance while visiting family and friends,” said Bright. “Our swivel beach chair is the only one of its kind and can offer an innovative solution to those stuck inside all winter long, suffering from pandemic fatigue.”

What buyers are saying

Verified reviews from the company’s website consistently highlight the swivel as the standout feature in practical use. Nick G. wrote: “Have never had a chair like this before! Got mine in blue. Super solid build and the swivel is perfectly smooth. Finally the perfect recreational chair.” Jonathan Romero noted: “This chair is amazing! I love how easy it is to carry around and when I’m sitting at the beach I can easily move away from the sun if needed!”

The social dimension comes up repeatedly. Gail Noun Marra described the effect at home: “No more dragging my chair in the pool deck or at the beach. They fight over who gets the chair now.”

A few practical considerations

At 15.5 pounds, the Orbit is not the right choice if the priority is the lightest possible load to carry over long distances. It is better suited to shorter hauls — from a car to the beach, from a garage to the backyard — where the swivel and reclining features justify the weight. The 225-pound weight capacity is adequate for most users but falls below the limits offered by some heavy-duty outdoor chair options.

An attached holder fits a drink or phone, while a rear pouch stores extra items.

As with any chair containing a mechanical swivel assembly, longevity depends on basic maintenance: brushing off sand rather than rinsing (the company recommends against rinsing), wiping down after use, and storing out of the elements between seasons. The company explicitly recommends keeping the chair as dry as possible to prevent mold and mildew on the fabric.

The 90-day warranty covers manufacturing defects but does not extend to normal wear and tear, neglect, or accidental damage.
