Lift Foils, the Puerto Rican company known for pioneering eFoil technology, has announced two new models—the Lift5 and LiftX. These electric hydrofoil surfboards aim to simplify setup while improving performance on the water. The new designs offer tool-free assembly, a lighter body, and new features catering to both casual riders and experienced surfers.
How eFoils work
For those unfamiliar with eFoils, these boards feature a streamlined mast extending from the bottom, housing a motor, propeller, and foiling wing. Riders start with the board floating on the surface, but as speed increases, the wing lifts the board above the water, allowing for smooth, high-speed gliding. The reduced drag makes eFoiling an efficient and thrilling way to ride.
Lift Foils first introduced motorized eFoils in 2015, though non-motorized foiling boards existed before. Their latest models, the Lift5 and LiftX, follow the release of the Lift4 in 2023, offering new refinements designed in collaboration with surfboard shaper Sean Ordoñez.
Key features and upgrades
The Lift5 and LiftX share several improvements over their predecessors. Both boards are constructed from lightweight carbon fiber and feature a double concave bottom for smoother touchdowns, along with “sharper chine rails [outside edges] for crisp transitions.”

One of the most notable upgrades is the ‘Lift Connect System’, which allows users to attach the carbon fiber mast, wing, and motor with a simple lever click—eliminating the need for hand tools. The battery system has also been redesigned with a double-walled structure that clicks securely into place on the deck. The updated inline cooling system builds on Lift Foils’ existing liquid cooling technology, ensuring efficient temperature regulation.
Differences between Lift5 and LiftX

While both models share core improvements, they cater to different types of riders.
- Lift5: Marketed as “the quietest eFoil available,” this model is optimized for smooth, high-speed cruising on flat water.
- LiftX: Designed for wave riding, the LiftX allows users to cut power once they catch a wave and ride it like a traditional foil surfboard. To keep drag to a minimum, the propeller blades can be remotely folded and retracted once the motor is switched off.

Performance and availability
Though specific speed and battery life details have not been released, Lift Foils states that the Lift5 and LiftX will likely match the performance of the Lift4, which can reach speeds of at least 30 mph (48 km/h) and run for up to 2.5 hours per charge.
Preorders for both models open on February 25th, with shipping expected to begin on April 15th. Pricing and additional specifications have yet to be announced.
