Choosing between a camper van and a travel trailer can be a complex decision for RV buyers, as each type offers unique advantages and practical limitations. Addressing this common dilemma, French startup Bivoak introduces the Bivan, a camping solution designed to seamlessly blend the benefits of camper vans and caravans into one functional vehicle.
Founded in 2021 by Vincent Clédic, an experienced RV salesman and passionate traveler, Bivoak was conceived from a desire to create a new kind of travel trailer, influenced significantly by classic Volkswagen pop-up camper vans. “A lifelong vehicle adventurer and an RV salesman by trade,” Clédic leveraged his understanding of traditional camper designs, aiming to combine compact maneuverability with spacious living.
One of Bivoak’s initial innovations began with the trailer chassis. Inspired by boat trailers, the Bivan’s axle is positioned significantly farther back, a design choice intended to enhance stability. This unique axle placement allows the Bivan to stand securely at campsites using just the front jockey wheel, eliminating the need for additional stabilizers. Moreover, the low-positioned chassis combined with a pop-up roof ensures the vehicle maintains a height of just 6.2 feet (1.9 meters), enabling easy storage in most standard garages.
The Bivan distinguishes itself visually with its retro-inspired capsule design. Its dual-tone paint and simple yet iconic shape are clear homages to the classic Volkswagen Type 2 camper vans and vintage camping trailers. The front of the vehicle features a drop-belly area just ahead of the tires, doubling as an integrated step leading into the trailer.

Perhaps the most distinctive feature of the Bivan is its double-door entry, directly inspired by Volkswagen Kombi vans from the 1950s and 60s. Measuring 43 inches (110 cm) wide, this dual-door system facilitates easier loading and encourages open-air living at campsites. Bivoak emphasizes that this design is unprecedented in the camping trailer market, offering practical and aesthetic appeal.
Further enhancing its versatility, the Bivan includes a glass lift-gate at the rear, a thoughtful addition providing panoramic views directly from the sleeping area. Bivoak enhances the lift-gate functionality by introducing a split design, incorporating a drop-down tailgate that doubles as an outdoor cooking table or serving platform, subtly integrating pickup-truck-style utility into the camper’s multifunctional layout.

At approximately 202 inches (514 cm) long, the Bivan matches the length of a Mercedes-Benz V-Class. However, by eliminating the driver’s cockpit space required in camper vans, Bivoak maximizes internal living areas, notably incorporating a fully-equipped bathroom—a feature often missing or significantly compromised in similarly sized camper vans. The full-width bathroom in the Bivan smartly positions the shower and toilet at opposite ends. The shower space includes retractable screens to protect interior furnishings from moisture, and the sink faucet doubles as a versatile shower head, extendable outdoors for external use. Additionally, the portable toilet can be conveniently relocated for outdoor use within a separate privacy enclosure.
Inside, the Bivan echoes classic camper van layouts, especially in its central kitchen and seating areas. The rear bench seat, inspired by traditional van configurations, swiftly converts into a comfortable double bed thanks to a specialized slide-and-collapse mechanism. Further sleeping space is provided by an additional bed located within the pop-up roof, comfortably accommodating a total of four individuals.

The Bivan’s kitchen area features amenities expected by modern RV travelers, including a two-burner gas stove, a sink, and a 65-liter refrigerator/freezer. Ample cabinetry and drawers provide storage solutions, complemented by a thoughtful built-in wine rack—a nod to its French origins. Dining convenience is supported by a removable pedestal table strategically placed to allow unobstructed kitchen access.
Beyond interior comforts, the Bivan is equipped with essential RV systems, including a battery-powered electrical setup supplemented by solar charging capabilities and shore power connections. It also features a Truma Combi air and water heater for reliable temperature regulation, alongside a centralized command panel offering convenient monitoring and control of the trailer’s various systems.

Weighing approximately 2,200 lbs (1,000 kg) in its base configuration, the Bivan reaches 2,535 lbs (1,150 kg) when fully optioned, with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 2,865 lbs (1,300 kg). This modest weight ensures compatibility with a wide range of towing vehicles, enhancing its appeal to diverse RV enthusiasts.

Priced at €33,700 (approximately US$36,365), the Bivan offers an attractive balance of form, function, and affordability. Additionally, Bivoak provides rental options, making it accessible to those who wish to experience its unique blend of camper van and trailer lifestyles without immediate ownership commitment.
